Description
Number 11, located to the right of the Mackintosh Arms, is a house and shop built in 1826 by Woodhead and Hurst of Doncaster for Aire and Calder Navigation. The building features a late 19th-century shop front and has undergone some 20th-century alterations. It is constructed of brick in Flemish bond and is colour-washed, topped with a Welsh slate roof. The structure stands three storeys high and has a single window on the first floor.
The shop front includes a stuccoed plinth with a segmental-headed basement window. To the right, there is an entrance with an inappropriate inserted 20th-century door, while to the left, the shop window is boarded over and features a moulded sill and a plain stuccoed apron. The window surround is adorned with consoles that bear carved foliate and grapevine ornament, along with a plain frieze and a moulded cornice, which are also boarded over. A first-floor sill band is present, and there is a later 19th-century four-pane sash window on the first floor. The second-floor window retains its original opening and sill but has 20th-century glazing. Both windows are set beneath rubbed-brick cambered arches. The building has a moulded corniced wooden gutter and a stack that straddles the ridge to the left, featuring a plain ashlar band and a brick cornice. The shop was disused at the time of resurvey. The interior has not been investigated. This building is part of the original planned port settlement beside Goole Docks, with Aire Street serving as the main commercial street. It is included for its group value.
