Description
The brick water tower, built in 1885, is located on Lower Bridge Street in Goole. It is constructed of red brick in English bond and features a sheet metal dome and a cast-iron water tank. The tower is cylindrical, standing approximately 43 metres high and 10 metres in diameter.
The bottom stage of the tower serves as a deep plinth and contains a west entrance, which has a round-headed opening with a raised round-chamfered surround and a sheet metal door with five chamfered orders. The tall second stage features a fluted shaft with recessed panels that step in at both the top and bottom. This stage has five tiers, each with four slit lights, and is topped with a corbelled brick cornice.
The drum-shaped top stage includes a plain plinth, four slit lights, a plain raised brick frieze, a moulded ashlar cornice, a rounded ashlar blocking course, and the dome. This water tower has been superseded by a nearby reinforced concrete water tower built in 1927 and is no longer in use.
