Description

Sand Hall is a country house dating to 1777, with substantial additions and alterations made over the subsequent century. The original core was built for John Scolefield, and further work was carried out in 1870-72 by J M Teale of Doncaster, followed by front and back porches in 1889 and bay windows in 1895. Further alterations occurred between 1908 and 1909, undertaken by Benjamin Jacobs of Hull. The house is constructed of brick in Flemish bond, with a Welsh slate roof. It features a central-hallway entry and a service wing to the rear.

The south facade is three storeys high and seven bays wide, arranged 3:1:3, with the central bay projecting slightly. A single-storey, single-bay front porch is located to the left, and a narrow two-storey, single-bay extension sits to the right. Steps lead to a 19th-century pedimented glazed porch containing a six-fielded-panel door with glazed upper panels and an overlight, set within a richly decorated doorcase featuring fluting and paterae. Consoles support a dentilled pediment bearing a datestone inscribed "JS". Bays 3 and 5 have plate-glass sash windows set beneath keyed brick arches. The outer bays incorporate canted bay windows with plate-glass sashes and keyed stone lintels. The front porch has a board door and plate-glass sash, with a hipped roof to the left. The extension to the right has a narrow plate-glass sash and a dentilled band above. The first floor features a central plate-glass sash within a keyed, eared architrave with a dentilled hood, flanked by plate-glass sashes beneath flat, keyed brick arches. A narrow plate-glass sash is located in the extension to the right. The second floor has a central round-headed window with imposts and keystone, flanked by squat plate-glass sashes beneath flat, keyed stucco arches. A dentilled eaves course runs along the top, and a hipped roof includes stacks to the rear.

The east front is three storeys high and seven bays wide, arranged 2:3:2, with an advanced central section bowed to the ground and first floors, and projecting outer bays added to the ground and first floors. The central section has plate-glass sashes on a continuous sill band to both ground and first floor. The left bays are blind, while the right bays have plate-glass sashes. All openings are set beneath flat brick arches, with dentilled bands at the first floor and eaves. Hipped roofs cover the outer bays. The second floor features a tripartite segmental-arched window with plate-glass sashes to the central section, and a squat sash to the right. A central dentilled pediment is present, and hipped roofs cap the outer sections.

Inside, a fluted arch is found in the hallway, and the open string staircase has column-on-vase square knop balusters, carved tread ends, and a ramped handrail.
