Description
The Blyth First World War Memorial is located at the north-western entrance to Ridley Park, next to the Boer War and Second World War memorials. It features a granite pylon, approximately 4 meters tall, set on a large base with two shallow steps. The design is loosely inspired by Sir Edwin Lutyens’ Whitehall Cenotaph, with the pylon tapering back in three stages. A wreath is carved in relief on the middle stage, while the lower stage displays bronze name plaques on three sides.
The main dedicatory inscription is carved into the granite base, which reads: "1914 – 1918/ IN REMEMBRANCE OF/ THE MEN OF BLYTH WHO ENDURED GREAT HARDSHIPS,/ ACHIEVED GLORIOUS DEEDS, AND DIED FOR FREEDOM/ AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR."
