Description
The Office of The Saxonia Electrical Wire Company, originally the Roan School, is an 1808 building featuring two storeys and an attic, with three windows. It has a mansard roof covered with large slates and three flat dormers. The structure is made of yellow stock brick and has a parapet. The sash windows, which include glazing bars, are topped with gauged flat brick arches. A modern double door, which is wider than the original, is set in a round arched recess and features a similar arch. To the right, there is a one-storey, three-bay extension, also constructed of yellow stock brick, with a low pitched hipped slate roof. This extension has modern doors and windows. Above a small door on the right, there is a plaque that reads: "Erected AD 1808 Grey Coat School Founded 1677 MR JOHN ROAN By his will dated 16th March 1643 Devised certain estates the rents whereof were directed to be applied to the education and clothing of poor townsborn children of the parish of Greenwich. This tablet was set in 1835." The plaque also lists the names of the Vicar and churchwardens.
