Description
No. 3 Greenwich Church Street is a former inn that has been converted into a betting shop. It dates from the late 17th century and has been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of brick, with the principal elevations rendered, and features a hipped tiled roof with end stacks.
The main facade, which has seven bays, is oriented at right angles to the street and faces St Alphege's churchyard, while the street elevation has two bays. The building stands three storeys high and is characterized by a deep dentiled eaves cornice and bands between each storey. The second-floor band is interrupted by a central staircase window on the main elevation, which is flanked by a symmetrical arrangement of one short and two broad openings on either side, although most of these are now blocked.
The street elevation includes 19th-century sash windows set within architrave surrounds. The ground floor has been altered with a 19th-century public house facade on the side and a 20th-century shop front on the street, which is considered to have no architectural interest. Despite these changes, No. 3 remains a remarkable example of a grand late 17th-century composition and holds significant group value within its context.
