Description

The Mitre Public House, built around 1840, is a three-and-a-half-storey building with three windows on the front. It is constructed from greyish yellow stock bricks with stucco dressings. The parapet features a stuccoed blocking course above a half-storey, which is defined by sunk panelled brick pilasters. On the first and second floors, four tall brick pilasters with stucco capitals support the main entablature, which includes a stucco cornice and a brick blocking course. The sash windows, which have glazing bars, are adorned with moulded architraves; those on the second floor are shouldered. The first-floor windows are enhanced with a stucco frieze, cornice, and pediment. The ground floor has been modernised with tiles but still retains a modillion cornice.

The building has a five-bay return to Roan Street, with bays divided in a 1:3:1 pattern, featuring four pilasters and an entablature. The windows in the central part lack architraves, but the first-floor windows have round-arched stucco tympana above, along with moulded architraves and a spring string. The five-bay north return includes Doric pilasters similar to those on the main front. The slightly recessed three-bay centre section is topped with a pediment that features a polychrome relief mitre and bands in the tympanum. The first-floor side windows are three-light with segmental arched recesses above.
