Description
15 Morden Road is a mid-19th century house divided into three sections. It is built of multicoloured stock brick with stucco dressings. The left section has two storeys and an attic with one window, featuring a slate mansard roof and a dormer. It includes a stucco frieze, cornice, and blocking course, along with gauged brick window arches. The central section is also two storeys with one window and has a parapet. Its first-floor window is round arched with a stuccoed architrave and keystone, and a stuccoed spring string. The rusticated ground floor features a half-glazed door beneath a modern gabled hood. The right section, which projects slightly, has three storeys and is topped with a gable. It has rusticated ground floor quoins and flat pilasters above that support an open pediment. The segmental-headed windows include a first-floor window with a console bracketed cornice and cresting, and a second-floor window with a moulded architrave. The long, round-arched ground floor casements have a moulded architrave, keystone, and spring string, opening to a small balcony with a cast iron rail. A blue plaque from the London County Council notes that composer Charles Gounod, who lived from 1818 to 1895, stayed here in 1870. The house is listed for its connection with Gounod.
