Description

TQ 2981 SE CITY OF WESTMINSTER GREEK STREET, W1 58/58 24.2.58 No. 48 GV II Medium sized terrace house. c.1741-42 retaining good interior. Brown brick, slate roof. 3 storeys, basement and dormered mansard. 3 windows wide. Ground floor much altered with entrance to right. Upper floors have recessed metal casements in original stone architraves, those on 1st floor with pulvinated friezes and cornices. 1st floor stone plat band and sill band; parapet with stone coping (originally with cornice). Wrought iron urn finialed area railings. Interior retains some of the original fittings with panelling and plasterwork ceilings to ground floor rooms, despite alterations, passage archway to stair compartment flanked by Ionic pilaster; open well full height stair compartment with coved ceiling and lantern light, cut string carved bracket stair with column balusters and newels; good 1st floor front room panelling with enriched dado and cornice, marble chimneypiece, elaborately modelled plasterwork to ceiling with cartouches and female masks etc, panelled 2nd floor rooms with box cornices, and partially intact panelling to closet rooms etc. Survey of London; Vol. XXXIII.
