Description
No. 48 Greek Street is a medium-sized terrace house built around 1741-42, which retains a good interior. It is constructed of brown brick with a slate roof and has three storeys, a basement, and a dormered mansard. The building is three windows wide, with a much-altered ground floor entrance located to the right. The upper floors feature recessed metal casements set within original stone architraves, with those on the first floor adorned with pulvinated friezes and cornices. There is a stone plat band and sill band on the first floor, and the parapet has stone coping, which originally included a cornice. The area railings are made of wrought iron and topped with urn finials.
Inside, the house retains some original fittings, including panelling and plasterwork ceilings in the ground floor rooms, despite various alterations. The passage archway leading to the stair compartment is flanked by Ionic pilasters. The open well stair compartment is full height, featuring a coved ceiling and lantern light, along with a cut string carved bracket stair that has column balusters and newels. The first floor front room boasts good panelling with an enriched dado and cornice, a marble chimneypiece, and elaborately modelled plasterwork on the ceiling, which includes cartouches and female masks. The second floor rooms are panelled with box cornices, and there is partially intact panelling in the closet rooms.
