Description
Numbers 17 and 18, including the upper storeys of Number 18 and access thereto, form a terrace of houses built around 1735 as part of the same row as Number 16. Number 17 has a rendered façade, while Number 18 is painted stock brick, with a concealed roof. The houses are four storeys high, with each front three windows wide, the right-hand bay of Number 17 being wider. The ground floor of Number 17 was altered in the mid-20th century with shop fronts. Number 18 retains its exposed basement and a house doorway to the left. The door consists of six fielded and moulded panels, set within panelled reveals, and is protected by a wooden architrave case with carved consoles which formerly supported a cornice. The upper floors have windows with segmented arches. Number 18 still has the original recessed sash windows with glazing bars; Number 17 has casements. The interior of the houses retains some original features, including pilastered panelled passage halls, a dog-leg staircase with turned balusters and carved tread ends (largely boxed in), and box cornices.
