Description
No. 20 Greek Street is a house and shop that was rebuilt in 1842, originally serving as a shop for Hopkins and Purvis, colourmen. The building is constructed of stock brick and has a concealed roof. It stands four storeys tall and is two windows wide. The ground floor features an original shop front with a house door to the right and two display windows on either side of the shop doorway. These elements are framed by wooden pilasters that support an entablature with a fascia that includes a dentil cornice and carved bracket stops. The ground floor also has a panelled house door and a panelled and glazed shop door with shutters, both topped with rectangular fanlights. The display windows have small panes set on panelled risers.
On the upper floors, there are recessed glazing bar sashes set in stucco architraves, with those on the first floor featuring cornices on consoles and bracketed sills. A stucco string course runs above the second floor, and the building is topped with a crowning stucco modillion cornice and blocking course. Additionally, there is a large swivel hoist adorned with scrolled ironwork located below the left-hand first floor window.
