Description
No. 2 Old Compton Street is a house that has been converted into a public house with accommodation above. It dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century and has undergone later alterations. The building features rendered brickwork and a tiled mansard roof, standing at three and a half storeys tall.
The ground floor has three bays, with an entrance facing Charing Cross Road and a pair of small paned sash windows. The elevation on Old Compton Street also includes a pair of small paned sashes and a blank recessed panel. The upper floors consist of two bays on Old Compton Street and one bay on Charing Cross Road, with recessed sashes on the first floor and casements beneath fixed lights on the upper floor, all featuring rendered cills. The window designs suggest that the original tall proportions have been preserved. Each front has a single full dormer. There are party wall stacks.
Inside, above the ground floor, the original plan layout remains intact. The building includes an open-well staircase with a moulded closed string, some original turned balusters, a moulded rail, and newels that consist of a column with a square base, although the finials have been removed. The interior also features plain panelling with deeply moulded box cornicing. This building is a rare example of an early house that represents the initial phase of Soho's development, alongside Nos. 4, 5, 6 Old Compton Street and 101 Charing Cross Road.
