Description
No. 5 Old Compton Street is a house that has been converted into a restaurant and flats. It dates from the late 17th century, with early 19th-century and later alterations. The front facade is made of colourwashed brick, while the rear wall features early brickwork. The building has a tiled mansard roof that is set behind a parapet at the front and includes a central brick chimney stack. It stands four storeys tall, raised from three.
The ground floor has a doorway with a moulded architrave and an overlight, along with a semi-circular blind fanlight above. There is a restaurant window and entrance. On the first floor, there are a pair of casement windows, while the second floor has a pair of sash windows. The upper floor features tall, narrow sashes on each side of a paired sash. The rear wall extends beyond the general building line and is made of original early stock brickwork, with Fletton returns. The first-floor windows have flush frames with later sashes.
Inside, there are remains of a stair that rises against the stack, featuring a moulded ramped rail, turned newels, and stick balusters. Some matchboard panelling is present in the stairwell and in an upper floor room, although some of it is now boarded over. The building is notable for retaining an early vernacular plan form in the area and is said to have some surviving timber framing.
