Description

OLD COMPTON STREET TQ 2981 SE 58/105 No 6 II GV House, now restaurant with accommodation above. Late C17/early C18 with later alterations. Rendered brick, tiled butterfly form roof, behind parapet. 3 1/2 storeys, 2 bays. Ground floor late C20 restaurant entrance front and fascia. First and second floors, pair of casements beneath overlights in near flush frames and with rendered Cills. Tall proportions of the windows may reflect'the early window form. Plain rendered band at eaves height. Rear, timber casement dormer. Interior: Above ground floor retains original plan form with closet wing to rear. Staircase with moulded closed string, moulded rail, columnar newels with square bases and knobs, the finials missing. Balusters boarded in or removed, but visible features compare with staircases at Nos 2 and 4 Old Compton Street and 101 Charing Cross Road. Deeply moulded box cornicing, plain panelling to stairwell. Further panelling assumed to survive beneath later cladding. Rare survival of early house representing earliest phase of Soho's development (q.v.) Nos 2, 4 and 5 Old Compton Street and 101 Charing Cross Road.
