Description
No 4, Old Compton Street is a house that has been converted into a restaurant with accommodation above. It dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century and has undergone later alterations. The building is constructed of rendered brick, with the roof hidden behind a parapet. Originally three storeys, it was raised to four storeys in the 19th century and features two bays. The ground floor has a late 20th-century entrance and fascia.
The first floor has a pair of casement windows beneath overlights, while the second floor features a pair of small-paned sash windows. The third floor also has a pair of casements beneath overlights. All the windows have rendered cills, and the tall proportions of the first and second floor windows may reflect an early window style. There is a rendered party wall stack on the left side.
Inside, the original plan form is retained above the ground floor. The rear room still has a dormer cupboard with a lower pair of doors and an upper door with a segmental head, along with shaped shelves and plain panelling behind. The second floor landing has plain panelling, which is partly damaged. The staircase features a moulded closed string, some original turned balusters, moulded rails, and columnar newels with square bases and knobs, although the finials are missing. Additional decorative details likely remain, though they are obscured.
This building is a rare survival of an early house that represents the earliest phase of Soho's development, alongside Nos 2, 5, 6 Old Compton Street and 101 Charing Cross Road.
