Description
No. 101 Charing Cross Road is a house that has been converted into shops with accommodation above. It dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with some later alterations. The building is constructed of brick and features a plain tiled butterfly-form roof, along with tall party wall parapets. It stands three storeys high and has two bays. The ground floor has late 20th-century shop fronts and fascia. The first floor contains a pair of tall sash windows in flush frames, which are set beneath segmental brick arches. The second floor features a pair of casement windows with lights above, also in flush frames and beneath segmental brick arches. The tall proportions of the windows may reflect early window designs. There is a three-light tall dormer located behind the parapet.
Inside, above the ground floor, the original plan form is retained. The staircase has a moulded, closed string and includes some original turned balusters, a moulded rail, and columnar newels with square bases and knobs, although the finials are missing. This building is a rare survival of an early house that represents the earliest phase of Soho's development, alongside Nos. 2, 4, 5, and 6 Old Compton Street.
