Description

No. 88 Brook Street is a terraced town house that originated in 1725, with alterations to the front possibly made by C. R. Cockerell between 1822 and 1824. The interior was refurbished and a rear extension was added by Mewes and Davis from 1909 to 1910. The building features brown brick with a stuccoed ground floor and a slate roof, and it is five windows wide. There is a central entrance with an Ionic columned porch dating from 1822-24. The windows are recessed glazing bar sash windows set under flat red brick gauged arches. The attic storey and mansard were well proportioned in the 1909 rebuild. The original cornice is present over the second floor, with a cornice and parapet above the attic. The first floor has early 19th-century wrought iron balconettes and railings over the porch, as well as early 19th-century area railings. The rear of the house features a bowed ground floor projection on the terrace. Inside, the house is lavishly and elegantly fitted out by Mewes and Davis, showcasing a subtle and convincing blend of neo-Adam and Louis XVI styles, which includes a central gallery, a grand staircase with a fine wrought iron balustrade, and intricate plasterwork and boiseries.
