Description

CITY OF WESTMINSTER UPPER BROOK TQ 2880 NW 68/24 STREET, Wl No. 23 G.V. II Terraced town house. c.1742 with late C.18 internal alterations and 1808 rear extension; stucco and stone dressings and porch added by Thomas Cundy II in 1865. Brown brick with rusticated stucco ground floor, slate roof. 3 storeys, basement and dormered mansard. 3 windows wide. Enclosed Doric porch to right with lunette fanlight doorway and altered wing lights, crowning balustraded parapet. Recessed flat arched sash windows but with French casements on 1st floor with cornices on consoles; architrave surrounds to 2nd floor. Cornice and parapet; dormers with pediments on consoles. Centre and left 1st floor windows have stone balconettes with early C.20 ironwork. Cast iron area railings. Interior retains a number of original features and its plan with central top lit staircase flanked by closets serving front and back rooms, a number retain 1740s panelling with moulded dentil cornices; the hall opens through an archway onto the staircase which has stone treads with chamfered soffits and lyre pattern iron balustrade, the circular skylight drum is late C.18 and decorated withpaterae and festoons, early C.19 mouldings to 1808 rear extension etc. Survey of London; Vol. XL.
