Description
This is a terraced town house located on Upper Brook Street, dating from 1737 with alterations in the early 19th century and an attic storey added in 1865-66. The building is constructed of stucco with a slate roof and has four storeys plus a basement, topped by a dormered mansard. It is three windows wide. The ground floor is channelled and features a Cundy Doric porch on the right. The entrance has a semicircular arched doorway with side lights and a patterned fanlight, added during the early 19th century. The windows are sash windows within moulded architraves with cornices supported by consoles on the first floor. A balustraded balcony, also added by Cundy, runs over the porch. A decorative cornice and blocking course top the facade, with cast iron area railings below.
The interior retains the original layout, including a front compartment staircase hall with a cut string staircase. The stairs feature carved brackets, turned balusters, a scrolled foot, and a ramped rail, though these have been considerably restored and modified. A service staircase with turned balusters is also present. The front ground floor room boasts a decorated plaster ceiling with a central "sun king" motif. The stair compartment ceiling has slight Rococo plasterwork. The first floor rooms have moulded panelling and modillion cornices, with a chimney piece on the rear of the first floor. The second floor retains much of its original panelling.
