Description
No. 36 Upper Brook Street is a Grade II* listed terraced town house built in 1737, with a well-preserved interior dating from 1737 to 1742. An attic storey was added at the same time as the adjacent No. 35. The building has three storeys, a basement, and an attic, and features three windows across its façade. The entrance has an identical Gibbs surround doorway with a deeply moulded cornice, mirroring that of No. 35. The windows are recessed glazing bar sashes with red brick dressings and flat gauged arches topped with vermiculated keystones. A string course and continuous main and attic cornices connect with No. 35, as does the balcony on the first floor. The wrought iron area railings have torch finials, although the overthrow obelisks have been removed. The front of the building remains virtually unaltered.
Inside, the c.1742 interior is well preserved, featuring a front compartment staircase (with a lift inserted) but lacking back stairs on the ground floor due to the shallow site, which is occupied by a grand room at the rear. This room has a pilastered and pedimented doorcase. On the first floor, there are two rooms and a staircase leading to the upper floor, with partly curved walls above the left-hand side of the grand rear ground floor room. All main rooms retain their original panelling, marble chimney pieces, and fine compartmented plasterwork ceilings with restrained Rococo details. The main staircase also features plaster panels and reliefs on its walls, and the wrought ironwork of the staircase balustrade is partly intact.
