Description
Number 18 is a terraced town house, now used as offices, built between 1913 and 1916 for Mr. G P Kent. The design was created by Ralph Knott and E Stone Collins, with the facade by Edmund Wimperis. There were various alterations made in 1919 by Maples. The building features Portland stone ashlar, which is channelled at the ground floor level, and has a slated roof with two rows of dormers. It stands four storeys tall, including attics and a basement, and has three windows.
The entrance is plain and square-headed, with wooden double doors. A central bay projects from the ground floor to the second floor, featuring coved returns. The windows are recessed sashes, with the first floor having an architraved design and a continuous cast iron balcony. There is an enriched band at the second floor level, and the sashes are also architraved. An entablature at the third floor level includes an enriched frieze and a projecting cornice, with a bracketted cornice above and a blocking course.
Attached to the building are cast iron railings leading to the areas. The designer of the interior is not known, but most rooms are styled in a florid French and English 18th century design. A dramatic baroque staircase runs from the ground to the first floor, where the landing features a bowed wrought iron balustrade with a brass handrail. Above this, the staircase rises three storeys with an open well, which was once lit by a shaped lantern that is now blocked. The turned balusters have bulbous foliar bases. The building is included for its group value.
