Description
No 76 on Brook Street is a terrace house built in 1726 by the architect Colen Campbell for his own use. The building features dark brick and has a narrow front that rises four storeys, with a basement and a single dormer in a slated mansard attic. It is two windows wide and has a stone sill band at the first floor, a stone cornice at the third floor, and a subsidiary cornice at the parapet with coping. The entrance is marked by a wooden doorcase supported by three-quarter Ionic columns and an entablature. The windows have revealed sashes set within stuccoed architraves. In front of the basement area, there is a lead cistern bearing Campbell's monogram "C.C" and the date. The property is also enclosed by iron area railings. Although the interior has seen some simplification, it retains panelling and chimney pieces designed by Campbell, with the library being particularly well preserved. No 76 served as Campbell's residence from 1726 to 1729. There is a plaque from the Greater London Council commemorating this history, and it is referenced in the Survey of London volume XL.
