Description
No. 72 Brook Street is a Grade II* listed terrace house built in 1726 by Edward Shepherd for himself. The building features brown brick with quoin blocks on the party line and stands four storeys high, including a basement and a slated mansard attic with two dormers. It has three windows, although the ground floor has been altered to include arched windows set in rusticated arched recesses. The entrance is marked by a rusticated arch. The windows have revealed glazing bar sashes, with those on the first floor featuring wrought iron balconies. There is a bracketed main cornice at the third floor level and a parapet with coping. The property is also adorned with wrought iron area railings and an overthrow.
Inside, the house has a notable staircase accessed through a vaulted hall, with unusual detailing on the cut treads and a columnar balustrade. The first floor features an Ionic columned gallery. The original panelling remains in the main rooms on the ground and first floors, along with Rococo plasterwork ceilings created by Shepherd.
