Description
This mews range, numbers 1, 1A, and 2 Duke's Yard (including numbers 85 and 85A Duke Street), was built between 1900 and 1902 by Eustace Balfour and Thackeray Turner. It is constructed of red brick with Portland stone accents, has a tiled roof, and exhibits a sophisticated yet restrained architectural style inspired by the late Philip Webb.
The building is two storeys high with attics, and features a 15-window range. Coach house and garage doors are articulated with stone pilasters. The first floor has a series of flush-framed sash windows, with shallow brick pilasters defining bays above, culminating in a modillion cornice and a stone-faced attic with dormer windows projecting into the roof.
The return on the left side of the building features glazed brick facing on the ground floor and a lower, gabled wing with a square-headed entrance and overlight. The return on the right side presents a shaped and coped gable with a large central stack, a lower wing, and a reproduction 18th-century pedimented doorcase framing a segmental arched doorway with a panelled door – this is the entrance to number 85A. Ground floor glazing on this return is also brick-faced.
The row continues with numbers 85 and 85A Duke Street, which are built in a similar style but incorporate a shopfront dating from approximately 1910.
