Description

This is an electricity substation, built in 1904-05 by C.S. Peach and Balfour for the Grosvenor Estate. It is located in City of Westminster, concealed by a raised terrace with partitioning. The design, known as the Duke Street Transformer Station, provides an architecturally considered facade in the Edwardian Baroque style. The building is constructed of Portland stone and incorporates a stone-paved terrace and garden, surrounded by balustrades, with stone domed and columned pavilions at each end. The terrace is raised above a rusticated arcade of lunettes, which provides lighting for the substation located below.
