Description
The Church of St Mark's is a Grade I listed building located on North Audley Street in the City of Westminster. It was constructed between 1825 and 1828 by J.P. Gandy-Deering and later remodelled by Sir Arthur Blomfield in 1878. The church features a stone front that fits within a standard domestic plot width, showcasing a pure Greek Revival style. The façade is dominated by a fine portico in antis, supported by two Ionic columns and quoin piers, with details inspired by the Erechtheum. Above the portico is a deep straight entablature that is set back from the front plane.
A tall square bell turret with splayed corners, pierced circular louvres, and topped with a cross finial is derived from the Tower of the Winds. The deep portico includes three Greek doorways leading into small vestibules and further into a nine-compartment narthex, which features four square piers with Grecian capitals, creating a pronaos-like space that transitions from the domestic plot to the church behind. Blomfield's remodelling introduced Romanesque elements while retaining the galleries, creating a chancel and enhancing the roof structure over the nave with polychrome brickwork and scallop capital stone columns. The east window glass was designed by N.H.J. Eastlake.
