Description

22 and 23 Grosvenor Square is a town mansion built between 1906 and 1907, designed by Read and Macdonald. It has a main elevation facing North Audley Street and incorporates the building at number 43 North Audley Street. The building is constructed of Portland stone with a slate roof and exhibits a Free Classicism style incorporating English Baroque and French mid-18th century details. It is three storeys high, with a basement and a full attic storey above the entablature, topped with a dormered mansard roof. The design features nine windows across the front, with a slight asymmetry achieved by an extra bay to the north, creating a tripartite composition.

The ground floor is characterised by banded rustication. The central, slightly projecting two-storey bay contains the main entrance, which is a keystone-lintelled portal flanked by short screen walls ending in panelled piers with urn finials. A bay window is above the entrance, flanked by pairs of Ionic columns. Two-storey canted bays are situated on either side of the central bay, with prominent keystones over the ground-floor windows and first-floor windows, articulated by Ionic columns supporting entablatures and parapets. The bays between these canted bays incorporate pedimented cross-mullion windows. Shallow architraves frame the windows on the second and attic floors. A recessed wing, featuring similar details, has a canted end at the corner of the square, highlighted by an Ionic columned first-floor corner window. A two-storey and basement wing, with a balustraded parapet, extends to the north.

The interior has been altered, though some original ceilings and decorative elements remain on the first floor.
