Description

No. 10, Green Street is a terraced town house built in 1893-95 by Balfour and Turner. Constructed from red brick and stucco, with a slate roof, it represents an individual Free Style design incorporating slight Jacobethan details, showcasing the quality and inventiveness of the architects. The house is five storeys high with a basement, and two windows wide. The ground floor features two semicircular arched openings. The right-hand opening contains a doorway with two side-lights, all set within a concave, stone-faced recess which is elaborately decorated with leaf ornament concealing the tympanum and the left-hand side-light. The left-hand archway frames a four-light sash window. The first and second floors have a pair of through-storey canted oriels, topped with a balcony featuring decorative iron railings in front of the third-floor windows, which are set in shallow panels with relieving arches. The building is finished with a gabled attic. Arts and Crafts cast iron area railings are present. The doorway carving was likely undertaken by Laurence Turner, brother of Thackeray Turner.
