Description

The memorial is located outside the Church of St John the Evangelist, standing against the north aisle at the west end of the churchyard. It is a tall granite wheel-head cross set upon a tapering, rectangular shaft. The shaft stands on a tapering, stepped plinth, which itself rests on a low, square step. A narrow, paved path leads to the memorial from the main churchyard pavement. The dates 1914 – 1919 are applied in metal letters to the foot of the cross shaft. Below, on the front face of the plinth, a principal dedication reads "TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF / THE MEN WHO, BY GODS GRACE VICTORIOUS / FOUGHT FOR THEIR COUNTRY AND DIED / THAT THE CAUSE OF FREEDOM AND RIGHT MIGHT TRIUMPH / AND MORE PARTICULARLY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH / WHOSE NAMES ARE INSCRIBED HEREUNDER" followed by a list of 30 names. The front of the low step displays the inscription "DEATH IS SWALLOWED UP IN VICTORY."
