Description

A terrace of uniform houses dating to circa 1840-50, terminating in a public house (listed separately). The terrace is constructed of stucco with slate roofs and features four storeys, including an attic storey, and basements. Each front is three windows wide. Doorways, originally to the left of each front (some now blocked due to amalgamation into flats at numbers 2 and 6), are set within architrave surrounds and topped with rectangular fanlights. The windows are recessed sash windows, some retaining glazing bars. Those on the first floor have alternately triangular and segmental pediments resting on consoles, with architraves above. A continuous dentil cornice runs along the facade above the second floor. The balustraded parapet above the attic cornice has been removed in places. A cast iron balustraded balcony is carried across at first floor level, cantilevered from a triglyph frieze beneath. Cast iron spearhead area railings are also present. The terrace forms part of Tyburnia, a development of the Bishop of London’s estate planned by S P Cockerell after 1827, although the layout was modified by George Gutch.
