Description

The building comprises two terraced houses, numbers 17 and 18 Stanhope Terrace, along with number 26 Sussex Place. It dates from the mid-19th century and is constructed of stucco. Number 17 and 18 are three storeys and attic in height, while number 18 has an additional four storeys. The facades of numbers 17 and 18 are four windows wide, with number 18 featuring an additional curved corner bay on its right-hand side. Number 26 Sussex Place has two windows facing Sussex Place, with a blank two-window return to Stanhope Terrace. Projecting Doric porches are present at numbers 17 and 18. The ground floor is treated with channelled detailing. The windows have square heads and are architraved above the ground floor, with sash glazing bars, although plate glass is used in the first-floor windows of number 18, which are corniced. Balconies are present on the first floor of numbers 17 and 18. A dentil cornice is situated above the second floor of numbers 17 and 26, and a smaller cornice defines the attic. Number 18 has a richer modillion cornice, and tented canopies extend from the graduated first and second-floor balconies on the curved return, supported by slender ironwork.
