Description

The Church of St John the Evangelist is a chapel, now functioning as a church, built around 1831 by Charles Fowler. It is a Commissioners' church constructed of yellow brick with ashlar dressings, designed in the Gothic Revival style. The building features an 8-bay nave and chancel, with a west porch that is flanked by projecting bays. Church rooms are located beside the chancel. The west door is ogee-arched and is accompanied by a screen with panelling and cusped tracery. There is a prominent 6-light window with Perpendicular tracery and an embattled parapet. The west gable is flanked by angle turrets, and the aisle windows are 2-light with a transom, featuring cusped lights and mouchette above. The clerestory windows consist of 2 cusped lights with a sexfoil above, and there is a 7-light Perpendicular window at the east end. Inside, the church has an arcade of clustered columns with attached shafts, and a sexpartite vault where the vault shafts rest on corbels in the spandrels of the arcade. The eastern bay features panel vaulting, and there is early 20th-century stained glass present.
