Description

The Church of St Andrew, built between 1898 and 1902 by C Hodgson Fowler, is a Gothic Revival church located on Church Lane in Bishopthorpe. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar and features a plain tile roof. The church includes a west tower, a nave with aisles, a south porch, a chancel with a south aisle, and a north vestry.

The tower is three stages high, embattled, and supported by diagonal buttresses with offsets. Each side of the tower has two-light bell openings under hood-moulds. The south porch has a pointed archway decorated with fleurons above the doorway, which is framed by a roll-moulding architrave. The nave is four bays long, with buttresses featuring offsets for each bay. The aisles have straight, trefoil-headed two-light windows under hood-moulds, while the clerestory has similar three-light windows. The chancel, which is two bays long, has straight-headed windows with Perpendicular tracery in the south aisle and a clerestory window matching that of the nave. The east end of the south aisle features a three-light window with Perpendicular tracery. The north vestry includes three-light mullion windows, and the east window of the church is a five-light window with Perpendicular tracery at its head.

Inside, the church has octagonal piers with double-chamfered arches leading to the nave, and the chancel is supported by clustered columns.
