Description

The Cottage is a building that originally consisted of two houses but is now a single dwelling. It dates from the early 18th century, with later 18th century additions, a 19th century wing at the rear, and 20th century modifications. The exterior is made of colourwashed brick and features a pantile roof.

The structure has two storeys and four bays. The right bay is from the early 18th century and has a lower window and a roof line that has been raised to align with the later 18th century section. The entrance is located in the second bay and is sheltered by a 20th century porch. To the left, there is a tripartite bow window with a central 12-pane sash and 8-pane sashes on either side. To the right, there is a sash window with glazing bars and a Yorkshire sash with glazing bars. On the first floor, the windows include a 16-pane sash, a 30-pane sash set in a flush wood architrave, another 16-pane sash, and a Yorkshire sash with glazing bars. Stone cills are present throughout, with wedge lintels above the two right-hand ground floor windows and the right first floor window. The building has a ridge and end stack.

Inside, there is an inscription on the window pane in the fourth bay on the first floor that reads: 'A. Hedley frigged a Turkey Goldsmith N Castle The charming Miss Crooks Newcastle 1781 A good shag.'

The Cottage is included in the listing partly for its group value.
