Description

The Stables to Bishopthorpe Palace is a building that originally served as stables, a coach house, and a dovecote, and is now divided into two dwellings. It was constructed between 1761 and 1763 by Peter Atkinson I for Archbishop Drummond, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The structure is made of pinkish-brown brick, accented with red brick and ashlar dressings, and features a plain tile roof.

The building is three stories high with a single bay center flanked by two-story ranges, each having three first-floor windows. The center section has rusticated quoins and a segmental-headed carriage arch surrounded by quoined detailing. On the first floor, there is a Venetian window set in a round-headed recess that extends upwards into an open pediment. The second floor features a semicircular recess that contains a blind semicircular panel, topped with a segmental pediment.

The ground floor of the left range has two similar carriage arches, while the right side has a central doorway framed by quoined detailing, with 12-pane sash windows on either side. An ashlar band runs along the first floor, and all windows throughout the building are 6-pane sashes set under flat arches made of gauged brick. The interior includes an 18th-century open well staircase with turned balusters on the ground floor to the right.
