Description

No. 12, Hyde Park Street is one of a former pair, or end of terrace, town houses dating from approximately 1830 to 1840. The building is stucco-faced with a slate roof and has a basement and dormered mansard. It extends to three storeys, with two later additions at the top. There are three windows across the front. An architraved doorway is set back behind steps on the left side. The windows are recessed plate glass sashes, with pediments supported by consoles on those on the first floor. A main entablature, featuring a modillion and dentil cornice, sits above the second floor. The top floor extension is pilastered and finished with a balustraded parapet. The south return has been altered with the addition of a bow window. A stucco balustraded balcony runs along the first floor. Original cast iron area railings are present. A Greater London Council plaque commemorates W.H. Smith. The building is part of the post-1827 development called Tyburnia on the Bishop of London’s Estate.
