Description

Wilson House is a terrace building from the early 19th century, located on Sussex Gardens in the City of Westminster. It is constructed of brown brick in Flemish bond, with a stucco ground floor and outer bays featuring channelled stucco. The building has a stucco cornice and an additional cornice at the parapet, rising to four storeys and a basement.

The design includes a 12-bay central section that breaks forward, flanked by 8-bay wings and further 6-bay breakforwards on each side. The central bays feature round-arched arcading with an off-centre entrance and round-arched sash windows, some of which have glazing bars and radial glazing in the heads. Other entrances on the ground floor have been replaced with sash windows.

On the first floor, there are iron balconies, and the central breakforward has sashes with glazing bars, architraves, and hoods supported by consoles. The 8-bay wings display flat gauged brick arches, while the outer 6-bay sections have architraves with hoods and pediments above the outer windows. The upper floors mainly consist of sashes with glazing bars, and there is a cornice at the third floor level. Iron railings enclose the basement.

Originally known as Grand Junction Road, Sussex Gardens was an important part of the original layout of Bayswater.
