Description

The Wharf-side Shelter and Store, located at the rear of Travis Perkins Builders Merchants on Praed Street, dates from around 1840. The building features a brick ground floor and a predominantly timber first floor. It has a large hipped roof, which is covered with slate and supports an internal king-strut tie-beam truss, complete with twin angle struts and strutted rafters. Externally, the roof is supported by queen post type construction, with principal rafters that extend through the purlins, and a large timber column with radiating rafters at the hip. Some of the external timbers are chamfered and shaped. The ground floor includes a 20th-century entrance, while the first floor has timber access doors leading to the yard and canal. The interiors are plain, featuring brick and timber, with the first floor showcasing a row of original shaped pegs. This building is a significant and rare example of a once-common canalside feature.
