Description

The former vicarage to St Mark's Church was built between 1879 and 1880 by architects Spalding and Evans. It is constructed of red brick with Bath stone dressings and has a roof covered in brown Broseley tiles. The building has three storeys, a basement, and an attic. It features a canted bay window on the raised ground and first floors, which has four mullioned lights, with the first-floor lights being arched. To the right, there is a gabled porch with a moulded canopy and railings to the left front. Above the porch, a stone shield displays the Latin word 'SALVE' along with the date 1879 and a monogram. There is a single light with an arched upper section that aligns with the bay window, and a moulded string course runs above it. A two-light sash window is located on the second floor, topped by a corbel table. In the centre of the attic, there is a prominent dormer window with a pyramidal tiled roof that ends with a cast iron floral finial, and a chimney stack is positioned to the left. The interior has not been inspected. This vicarage was built to serve the newly completed St Mark's Church, designed by Arthur Blomfield in 1871-72. Along with the former church schools at 245 Marylebone Lane, these buildings create a cohesive group and were illustrated in The Architect on 21 February 1880.
