Description
No. 50 Albemarle Street is a terraced town house built around 1710-1720. It features a stuccoed front and a slate roof, rising four storeys with a basement and a dormered mansard. The façade is three windows wide, with a doorway to the right that has a stone doorcase topped with a moulded cornice hood supported by carved consoles. The windows are revealed segmental arched sash types, lacking glazing bars, and are adorned with keystones that extend to the plat bands above. There are plat bands between each floor and a bracketed main cornice. The first floor has wrought iron balconettes dating from around 1800.
Inside, the house retains much of its original interior, including doorcases, dados, and cornices. A notable feature is the fine staircase, which has an open string with carved brackets at the tread ends, twisted balusters, and a mahogany handrail that sweeps to columnar newels. This house was the original residence of John Murray, the founder of the publishing company of the same name, and it has several literary associations.
