Description

49 St James's Street is a Grade II* listed building, constructed in 1907 by Belcher and Joass, primarily Joass, for the Royal Insurance Company. The building features a granite and Portland stone facade with a slate roof and showcases a creative use of classical design elements. It stands as a corner block at St. James's, comprising four main storeys with an attic loggia and two tiers of dormers beneath a steeply pitched roof.

The Piccadilly side has three bays, with a splayed corner and a one-and-a-half bay return. The ground floor window bays are adorned with bronze trim and topped by a mezzanine, which is defined by paired slender Doric columns supporting an entablature featuring carved heraldic devices and a cornice above. The entrance at the splayed corner is highlighted by carved lions.

The second, third, and fourth floors are connected by continuous oriel windows with concave aprons. The second-floor windows are embellished with stylized pediments, while piers at the first and second floor levels include niches, and sculptured figures are present at the third floor level. The attic floor is set back behind a colonnade of paired Doric columns, and the roof features two tiers of shaped dormers.
