Description
No. 36 Hill Street is a terraced house dating from the mid-18th century, linked to nos. 58-59 South Street by an underground corridor. The building is constructed of brown brick and features a slate roof. It stands four storeys tall with a basement and is five windows wide. A first-floor plat band and a stone bracketed cornice at the third floor level add to its architectural detail. The windows are revealed glazing bar sashes set beneath flat gauged red brick arches. To the right, there is a stone doorcase with consoles and a cornice, and wrought iron area railings enhance the exterior.
Inside, the house has a front compartment staircase leading up to the first floor, featuring a cut string with turned balusters. The walls at the first-floor level are adorned with Rococo panels in the style of William Kent, separated by stucco pendants. These panels were formerly painted by Rex Whistler in 1936.
