Description
No. 20 Hill Street is a terrace house built around 1748-1750, with some alterations. It features dark brick construction and a slated mansard roof, rising four storeys with a basement and dormers. The façade has four windows, a stucco cornice, and a blocking course. There is a main stone cornice with a plain band beneath it at the third floor level, and a plain stucco band at the first floor level. The recessed sash windows have gauged flat brick arches and original glazing bars. A prostyle Doric portico with a dentil cornice leads to a square-headed doorway that includes a fanlight and well-crafted panelled doors. A continuous cast iron balcony is present at the first floor level, along with cast iron railings topped with urn finials. Inside, notable features include a cut string stone staircase with a wrought iron balustrade, original doorcases, and intricate plasterwork on the ceilings and friezes of the principal rooms on the ground and first floors, as well as marble chimney pieces in the first floor rooms.
