Description
Nos 42 and 44 Hill Street is a town mansion built in 1919 by W Ernest Lord and Mewes and Davis for the first Viscount Furness, with construction delayed by the First World War. The building features handmade red brick with sparse stone dressings and a slate roof, showcasing a Neo-Georgian facade that spans 50 feet. It includes glazing bar sashes and wrought iron balconies. The garden front is symmetrical, highlighted by a full-height central bow. The grand interior, likely designed by Mewes and Davis, features an entrance hall lined with polished stone and a staircase with a Tijou-style wrought iron balustrade. The ground floor room, originally the library, has carved oak panelling and built-in bookcases. On the first floor, there are two large rooms, one adorned with early Georgian-style pine panelling and the other featuring reset French boiseries and marble chimneypieces.
