Description

Number 38 is a substantial town mansion dating to 1920, designed by Wimperis, Simpson and J Murray Easton. The building is constructed of red handmade brick with Portland stone dressings, and is topped with a steep pantiled mansard roof extending to a parapet. It has two main floors plus an attic, and incorporates two tiers of dormers, arranged over nine bays.

A projecting, stone-faced enclosed porch shelters the central entrance. The porch features Ionic half columns and pilasters, along with a prominent keystone and a broken, scroll-shaped pediment. Within the outer, open pediment of painted lead, a cartouche displays the date. A panelled door leads into the property. Giant pilaster strips run along the corners and between the second and third, and seventh and eighth bays, rising from ground to first floor and repeated in the attic. The ground and first floors have square-headed windows; the outer bays feature intermediate circular windows. The attic windows are mainly segmental headed, but circular in the third, fifth and seventh bays, all with gauged heads and flush frames with glazing bars. An enriched modillion cornice sits above the first floor, leading to a parapet with elaborate torch finials above the pilasters. The lower dormers are segmental headed and corniced, while the upper dormers consist of square headed triplets with sash windows and glazing bars.

Cast and wrought iron area railings flank a pair of Portland stone piers, topped with pineapple finials. The interior has not been inspected.
