Description

No. 12 South Audley Street is a terraced town house built between 1736 and 1737, likely designed by the plasterer William Singleton, whose decorative work can still be seen inside. The house underwent alterations around 1769 and in the mid-19th century. It features a stucco façade and a slate roof, rising four storeys with a basement and a dormered mansard. The front is broad and slightly asymmetrical, originally having half windows on the right.

To the right, there is a square-headed doorway with a 19th-century panelled door and a plain fanlight, set within an original banded rusticated surround that includes a tripled keystone. The ground floor windows also have this rusticated treatment, with a half window to the right. The first and second floors have architraved windows, with the first floor featuring French casements in eared architraves, flanked by triangular pediments and a segmental one in the center. The attic has plain sash windows.

A main dentil cornice runs above the second floor, with an attic cornice and blocking course above. There is a stucco balustraded balcony on the first floor, supported by console brackets, and wrought iron area railings topped with urn finials. Inside, the original features include two exquisite Rococo plasterwork ceilings by Singleton in the ground floor rooms and a mid-19th century stone staircase. The first floor drawing room appears to date from the 1770s, likely altered after the removal of the original front compartment staircase, possibly due to fire damage from the adjacent No. 11.
