Description

Nos. 9 and 10 South Audley Street are a pair of end-of-terrace townhouses built around 1738-39. They are constructed of brown brick with red brick dressings and feature slate roofs. The buildings rise four storeys and include a basement, with an early to mid-19th century dormered mansard. Each house has a two-window-wide front without stylistic embellishments.

The entrance to No. 9 was relocated in the early 19th century to the corner of Hill Street, where a three-storey projection supported by three stone, pedestalled Doric columns was added around 1754. This projection has a square-headed recessed porch, with the ground floor finished in stucco, and the colonnade supports an entablature that returns to the main block. To the right of No. 10, there is an early 19th-century semicircular arched doorway with a patterned fanlight. Both houses feature recessed sash windows with intact glazing bars under flat gauged arches. The ground floor has a plat band, and there are sill bands on the upper floors, topped by a parapet with coping.

The side projection of No. 9 includes a plain Venetian window on the first floor, with blind windows flanking the central window on the floors above. The rear of No. 9 retains its original bow, while No. 10 has a flat rear with a carefully arranged "Venetian" grouping of the first and second-floor windows. No. 10 also features iron balconies on the first floor and wrought iron area railings topped with urn finials.

Inside, both houses have well-preserved interiors, including a central top-lit stair compartment and rooms at the front and back that retain much of their original panelling, doorcases, and chimney pieces. Notable features include a fine compartmented Rococo plaster ceiling in the rear ground floor of No. 9, a similar ceiling in the rear ground floor of No. 10, and wrought iron staircase balustrades.
