Description

TQ 2880 SW CITY OF WESTMINSTER SOUTH AUDLEY 79/32 STREET, Wl 12.1.77 No. 8 II Corner terraced town house. 1744, altered early and mid C.19. Brown brick with stucco dressings, slate roof. 4 storeys and basement. 5 windows wide with slightly advanced centre bay. Central C.19 porch of bold projection with Ionic pilasters and glazed canopy above. Recessed C.19 sashes, those on ground floor with foliated architraves and cornices, pedimented 1st floor windows, the central one of Venetian type; foliated architraves and friezes to 2nd floor; attic storey has central Venetian window. Main entablature over 2nd floor with central pediment and crowning cornice to attic storey again with central pediment. Cast iron balustrades to corbelled balconettes to all windows on main floors and cast iron window guards to 2nd floor. Parapet etc. returned to side elevation where there is also a slightly advanced bay and to rear where there is a full height bow of 3 windows. Ornate heavy cast iron railings to area. Interior retains elements of C.18 including good stone staircase with wrought iron balustrade, cornices etc. as well as neo-classical and fuller mid C.19 details. The home of Queen Caroline of Brunswick in the last year of her life. Survey of London; Vol. XL.
