Description

No. 8 South Audley Street is a corner terraced town house built in 1744, with alterations made in the early and mid-19th century. The building is constructed of brown brick with stucco dressings and features a slate roof. It has four storeys and a basement, with a width of five windows and a slightly advanced central bay.

The central porch, added in the 19th century, projects boldly and is supported by Ionic pilasters, topped with a glazed canopy. The windows are recessed 19th-century sashes, with the ground floor windows featuring foliated architraves and cornices. The first floor has pedimented windows, with the central window designed in a Venetian style. The second floor also has foliated architraves and friezes, while the attic storey includes a central Venetian window.

Above the second floor, there is a main entablature with a central pediment, and the attic storey is crowned by another central pediment and cornice. All main floor windows have cast iron balustrades on corbelled balconettes, and the second floor windows are protected by cast iron guards. The parapet continues around the side elevation, which features a slightly advanced bay, and at the rear, there is a full-height bow with three windows.

The area railings are ornate and made of heavy cast iron. Inside, the house retains elements from the 18th century, including a fine stone staircase with a wrought iron balustrade and cornices, alongside neo-classical and mid-19th century details. Notably, this building was the home of Queen Caroline of Brunswick during the last year of her life.
