Description

St George's Church of England Primary School, built in 1897-98 by P.A. Robson, is a school and flatted teacher's house located on South Street in the City of Westminster. The building is constructed of red brick with extensive stone dressings and features slate roofs. It showcases a distinctive Free Style Jacobethan design with intricate detailing, arranged in a tight L plan that includes the school and the teacher's house, connected by a staircase and latrine tower at the right angle junction. The school has four storeys and an attic, with a prominent seven-storey tower at the east corner.

The playground elevation is characterized by two major gabled bays and features large multi-light mullioned and transomed windows on the ground floor, set between half-octagonal brick and stone banded piers. The first floor has groups of three mullioned transomed windows with linked segmental stone relieving arches, paired windows on the second floor, and triple groups of attic lights, with the central light being taller and featuring transoms. The corner tower has an oriel and a turret roof, while the circular latrine tower has a shaped parapet and a cupola vent, along with stone sill bands.

The teacher's house, which has four and a half storeys, is designed to be more domestic in appearance, with banding reserved for the attic storey. It features a corner entrance with slightly Baroque details set under corbelling and oriels above. The side elevation includes three-light mullioned and transomed wood casements with segmental arches, and there is a segmental arched loggia at the attic storey. This building forms a picturesque group with the adjacent properties numbered 39 to 47.
