TQ 2880 NE CITY OF WESTMINSTER MOUNT STREET W1 69/121 (north side) 5.2.70 Nos 4, 5, 5A, 5B, 5C GV II

Corner block of houses. 1889 by Sir Ernest George and Peto. Red brick with cut and moulded brick ornament and Portland stone facing to the ground floor, slate roofs. Restrained Northern Renaissance style. Four storeys, basement and attic storey in steeep pitched straight gables. Arcaded stone ground floor with recessed porch to No 4, carved spandrels to arches. Two light sashed windows. Coupled windows framed by vertical brick ribs rising to gable, and cut brick ornament to aprons. No 5 has rectangular bay window to first and second floors with ribbing and cut and moulded brick ornament, and gabled attic. The entrance is at foot of splayed projecting corner "tower" surmounted by pointed slate roof at attic level - return has 4 storey rectangular bay window with gable over, cut brick ornament etc. Nos 5A, 5B, 5C adjoining, facing Carpenter Street, share 2 gables with 4 storey rectangular bay window between, ribbing and ornament as on Mount Street front. Enclosed stone entrance porches with weathered copings, those of Nos 5A and 5B paired. Ornate wrought iron area railings. Survey of London Vol XL.
