Description
This is a corner block of houses located at 4, 5, 5A, 5B, and 5C Mount Street, built in 1889 by Sir Ernest George and Peto. The building is constructed of red brick with cut and moulded brick ornamentation and features Portland stone facing on the ground floor, topped with slate roofs. It exhibits a restrained Northern Renaissance style and consists of four storeys, a basement, and an attic storey with steeply pitched straight gables.
The ground floor is arcaded in stone and includes a recessed porch at No 4, with carved spandrels above the arches. The windows are two-light sashed, and the coupled windows are framed by vertical brick ribs that extend to the gable, complemented by cut brick ornamentation on the aprons. No 5 features a rectangular bay window on the first and second floors, adorned with ribbing and cut and moulded brick ornament, along with a gabled attic. The entrance is located at the base of a splayed projecting corner "tower," which is topped with a pointed slate roof at the attic level. The return side includes a four-storey rectangular bay window with a gable above, also featuring cut brick ornamentation.
Nos 5A, 5B, and 5C, which face Carpenter Street, share two gables and a four-storey rectangular bay window in between, with ribbing and ornamentation similar to that on the Mount Street facade. The entrances are enclosed in stone porches with weathered copings, with the porches of Nos 5A and 5B paired together. Ornate wrought iron area railings complete the exterior.
